ProvenanceThe Macedonian Arts Council, from 2007-2010, presented as a gift to the Museum of International Folk Art 25 ensembles of multiple pieces. While a small number of the pieces were purchased, the majority of the costumes were donated to the Arts Council by collectors based in the United States and Macedonia

DescriptionThe strong similarities between this and the new bride's ensemble from Ohridsko Pole reflect cultural and geographic prox-imity; the city of Ohrid is approximately, from the town of Struga and Strushki Drimkol. Some of the differences between the two illustrated are due to age. For instance, the embroidery on the chemise would be in the relief stitch nofteno (seen on the older sokay from the same area instead of the cross stitch seen here. The quilted cotton zoban with velvet front replaced the wool klashenik in the twentieth century. At the turn of the twentieth century newly married women wore a densely patterned and very long wool belt wrapped over the black belt from the breasts to the hips and a more ornate belt with pompoms and coins attached to it, later replaced by a simplified kolan. Separate velvet sleevelets and the head scarf, marama, didn't change (Young Brides, Old Treasures: Macedonian Embroidered Dress, edited by Bobbie Sumberg, 2011).
