DescriptionBy wearing this bridal chemise before the actual wedding, a young woman announced that she was engaged to be married. It's a bridal garment because the sleeves have drawn thread embroidery on them, a style of decoration not worn by unmarried girls. Miyaks in this part of Macedonia did not use silver-gilt thread or braid, but instead used yellow mercerized cotton thread for trim, seen here on the sleeves and the openings of the upper garments. Garments on this mannequin include a blouse, mintan, visible only as sleeve ends and blue and black trim on the chest, the bridal chemise, and the outermost garment of wool, klashenik. The apron, kivchena skutina, is covered by three scarves except for its bottom fringe. The ornamented belt with fringed ends, prepashka, is seen in the back view. A pafta and head scarf, darpna, complete the outfit (Young Brides, Old Treasures: Macedonian Embroidered Dress, edited by Bobbie Sumberg, 2011).Parts of Ensemble: A.2010.77.9, Shirt: Mintan, c.1920
