ProvenanceThe Macedonian Arts Council, from 2007-2010, presented as a gift to the Museum of International Folk Art 25 ensembles of multiple pieces. While a small number of the pieces were purchased, the majority of the costumes were donated to the Arts Council by collectors based in the United States and Macedonia
DescriptionThe bride's dress in Gorna Reka differed from that of Miyak neighbors in Mala Reka. The pleated and embroidered dolama for women is unique to this area. The small ornament at the throat made from yarns and coins is called kiska; the same word refers to fringe, a bouquet, and also a sprig of a plant. 2 Women in Gorna Reka also wore a red print scarf around the hips, shamiya. But the styles shared some features, too, including the long-sleeved blouse, the vest with gold embroidery and buttons worn under the coat, and the use of purchased scarves around the waist. The jewelry usually worn by a bride is missing (Young Brides, Old Treasures: Macedonian Embroidered Dress, edited by Bobbie Sumberg, 2011).
