DescriptionThe village of Drenok, on the Macedonian side of Golo Brdo, is about 21 miles south of Debar. Brides there and in the villages now in Albania wore this ensemble. The close relationship of this outfit to the dress of Debarski Drimkol is clear, with strong similarities as well as distinct differences. The stitches used for the embroidery on the sleeves and the head scarf create a different texture, flatter and smoother. The layout of the sleeve is similar-the same band of poplitz runs from wrist to shoulder-but the motifs used are entirely different. Two sets of fringe on the apron and very long fringe on each end of the belt, as well as long red tassels attached to the waist scarf, naniz, contribute to the visual and aural impression that the bride would have made. The swishing of fringe was associated with the movement of waves in water and linked to the vitality of nature (Young Brides, Old Treasures: Macedonian Embroidered Dress, edited by Bobbie Sumberg, 2011).Parts of Ensemble: A.2008.7.62, Sash: Prepaska, c. 1900
