DescriptionNatural-colored, felted-wool, long vest that is sleeveless and slightly flared. The front and neck opening is edged in brown braid. An alternating black and red fringe outlines the arm holes, shoulder, and side vents. The bodice, with couched metallic threads on red cotton ground, has a cross pattern set within circles. This is outlined in alternating beads---two black, two white. Metal rectangles form a pattern toward the opening where a layer of gold-colored beads lead to white and blue buttons. The back shoulder area and that by the back hem vents is decorated with black and white beads, metal rectangles, metal sequins and couched metallic braid. Fine cords of brown and gold are tacked on to form a zig zag pattern, a leaf pattern (lazy daisy stitch) on the shoulder area and small circles of chain stitch in the vent/hem area. Pinkish lace is added inside the hem front. Red cotton with white bead pattern is outlined in black and white beads.19th century
