ProvenanceThe Macedonian Arts Council, from 2007-2010, presented as a gift to the Museum of International Folk Art 25 ensembles of multiple pieces. While a small number of the pieces were purchased, the majority of the costumes were donated to the Arts Council by collectors based in the United States and Macedonia
DescriptionThe differences between dress from western and eastern Macedonia are clearly visible in this ensemble. The chemise, made from blue-striped white cotton fabric, is not embroidered; a band of machine-made lace decorates the hem. The twill weave black wool coat, saya, the soberly striped apron and belt, kutacha and poyas, and the shoulder bag, torba, indicate that weaving was more important than embroidery in the area. Even the jewelry is gold instead of silver. The emphatic creases on the back of the coat and in the apron are deliberate, providing evidence of how the garments were stored: folded in chests in the villages (Young Brides, Old Treasures: Macedonian Embroidered Dress, edited by Bobbie Sumberg, 2011).Parts of Ensemble: A.2010.23.15, Belt: Belt, c. 1910
