DescriptionDescription from artist as recorded by Suzanne MacAulay:

Las Iglesias of Costilla County is a theme, which Josie worked and reworked multiple times. The original composition arranged with reference to a map first appears in Las Misiones (1993-94). Here Josie uses a star shape to center the arrangement of the central parish church, Sangre de Cristo, in San Luis surrounded by a constellation of mission churches in each of the neighboring villages. These are represented as medallions accompanied by other symbols of the history and culture of the region - wildlife, a traditional cowboy figure, an outdoor oven (horno), etc. Lobato’s overall theme is the predominant Catholic religiosity in southern Colorado communities.
