ProvenanceThe Macedonian Arts Council, from 2007-2010, presented as a gift to the Museum of International Folk Art 25 ensembles of multiple pieces. While a small number of the pieces were purchased, the majority of the costumes were donated to the Arts Council by collectors based in the United States and Macedonia
DescriptionThe Ohridsko Pole ensemble combines aspects of the Debar-Reka and Bryak dress practices. The wide panels of embroidery on the sleeves and the embroidered collar and neck opening are similar to those of the Bryak chemise, whereas the white drawn thread work on the bottom resembles that on the Miyak, Debarski Drimkol, and Golo Brao chemises. On this garment, the white work is done with a different technique in which threads are removed from the cloth of the garment and replaced with needle-woven threads. The chemise is the oldest item of this group, dated c. 1880. Over it is a quilted cotton vest with velvet yoke and silver-gilt embroidery, elek simen, and a wool sleeveless coat, klashenik. The separate upper sleevelets are velvet embroidered with silver-gilt thread and are called r'kai kadifeni. The head scarf, marama, is draped and pinned in place. The apron was probably more recently made than the other garments; the lace was probably added later still (Young Brides, Old Treasures: Macedonian Embroidered Dress, edited by Bobbie Sumberg, 2011).
