DescriptionOld #3364, Jillāyeh, Jubbeh, or Durrā'a [Short sleeve coat-dress] (ca. 1860) (Plate 1) This festive jubbeh is also from the Galilee and is cut similarly to no. 3359, but is of black linen, with sleeves of blue indigo. There is silk heremsy appliqué as in the preceding jubbeh, with the addition here of several squares of ikat appliqué. Again, the colors are red, yellow, and green. There is some embroidery on the outer part of the sleeves. The sides and back of the lower skirt are embroidered with much more intricate and varied designs than those of no. 3359, although the basic pattern is still vertical rows of stems and diamonds. Many of the diamonds are composed of double triangles. Traingles are one of the most popular forms for the ḥijāb, or “amulet.” The five rectangles at the top of the embroidery on the back panel of the skirt may also be a prophylactic against the Evil Eye, since the number five is considered particularly efficacious in warding off its effects.
