DescriptionDark stained and smoked three sided handle, finely carved and polished from use. Thick, uncarved section to insert into drum has a rectangular hole near end of handle. Handle itself has three mustached, male faces with crown-like sections atop, which touches drum side. Below heades is a three piece, carved, woven ball (an endless knot) atop a petal like form (lotus blossom), tied with a carved "braided" rope. This motif reverses and attaches to the tops of three elephant heads with pierced spaces under their trunks. Each elephant holds the head of a snake in it's hands, thier bodies twined together along the flat sides of the triangular handle to the tip of the handle. The snake bodies are surrounded by incised and bas-relief symbols, highlighted with pigments.Mid-20th century
