ProvenanceThe Macedonian Arts Council, from 2007-2010, presented as a gift to the Museum of International Folk Art 25 ensembles of multiple pieces. While a small number of the pieces were purchased, the majority of the costumes were donated to the Arts Council by collectors based in the United States and Macedonia.
DescriptionThe ensemble is named after the black-embroidered chemise, or koshula cretica, which was adapted from the chemise worn in neighboring Skopska Crna Gora. The other el-ements, such as the sleeveless wool coat decorated with pompoms, the apron, and head scarf, are typically Skopska Blatiya style. The bridal coat or kyurdiya has more rows of red pompoms than would the kyurdiya worn by a recently married or older woman.
