DescriptionSkinntröjor (shearling coats) were typically made
of white sheep or lamb’s skin with the curly fleece
turned inward for warmth, except at the cuffs, collar,
and hem, where it was turned outward for decorative
effect. As with other highly localized garments worn
around Lake Siljan, parishes developed their own
designs, echoing the silhouettes of other clothes
worn for church. For daily use, skinntröjor served
as outerwear. During church services, however,
the matching silhouettes let individuals treat them
as extra winter layers, wearing them underneath
their more formal wool jackets with the curly fleece
edgings peeking out (from exhibition label text).
