ProvenanceThis ensemble was commissioned for the Dressing with Purpose exhibition after Heidi Mattsson’s Facebook post about making a Sverigedräkt from IKEA shopping bags and recycled materials went viral in international media. After contacting her, I visited her home in 2018 to pick up a copy for the museum. Long-time docent Elisabeth Alley donated the funds to purchase the outfit.
DescriptionThis jumper of plastic blue Ikea bags has a pleated skirt, composed of three separate tiers. The bodice with four paired metal grommets and ties with the yellow and blue Ikea bag straps printed IKEA. A handsewn green cotton thread outlines the opening from the shoulder to the waist. On each side are three stylized white cotton flowers with sewn yellow centers. There are also three felt leaves on each side: two near the shoulder, the third by the lowest flower.
