DescriptionDark background, swags tied back at sides with tassels. Image in white hoop skirt sprinkled with flowers, bordered with gold braid, stands on rococo pedestal flanked by pinks in cornucopias. Image is crowned, has simple, long blue cloak. Child is also crowned, rests on V's left hand, she holds rosary in right hand. Child holds smaller rosary and a blue orb in opposite hand. This is typical of third-rate canvases sent in sets to NM missions from Mexico--alll were covered with a bolus ground and figures, light-colored details, etc., thinly brushed over this. This image is obviously a "statue painting " depicting an existing image rather than the painter's own concept of the subject. Repairs: Relined and cleaned by F. Du Pont Cornelius, November, 1953, for $100.00, which was paid by art department (SAR) painting was reattached to original stretchers. See file on DuPont Cornelius conservation records for before and after views of this, as well as his report on his work.
