ProvenancePurchased with a lot of retablos from Julius Gans, June 1952 for $100. This includes numbers A5.1953.55 through A5.1952.82a. The amount of $100.00 was supplied by the Historical Society of New Mexico. Mr. Gans had this lot of retablos in his storerooms for more than 20 years without having them on display, and had, in fact, lost track of them until 1952. It was his wish to have them remain in the Museum in Mew Mexico which prompted him to make the exceedingly generous arrangements of the above token-price for the lot. See note A5.1952.82
DescriptionHalf-length figure facing to right of panel--has open crown, much suggesting orignal painting of this image, and Infant is in the disphonous loin cloth of the original version. Here resemblance ends. Virgin's hands both hold Infant at hips, while His hands are both stretched toward her. She has red dress, blue cloak with yellow facing (echo of gold?) and no trace of letters on cloak. No clouds or roses, but dappled red and green formless filling at bottom of panel. No inscription. No crown on Infant. Style is in file-line manner, cf CW-R , sometimes thought to be a "marginal" type of Rafael Aragon. Cleaned, waxed, June 1952. Old sale price 1930 $7.50Artist not recorded
